It’s getting dark outside earlier, leaves have started changing color and there is a crisp chill in the air.  These are some of the signs that Halloween is on its way.  There is nothing like hanging out with your family watching a good Halloween movie to get yourself into the Halloween spirit.

So make some popcorn and curl up under some blankets with your family to watch some of these family Halloween movies for kids. Nothing on this list is too scary and they are all family-friendly.

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

It seems like when I grew up, there were Charlie Brown movies for all the holidays and Halloween was no exception.  This Charlie Brown special came out in 1966.

This movie is about Charlie Brown and his friends who are all getting ready to go out trick-or-treating.  Linus spends the night in a pumpkin patch because of a story about the “The Great Pumpkin”.

A lot of times you can find this special playing on TV, Netflix or Amazon Prime Video.  Check it out on Amazon here.

My brother in law actually worked on making this movie.  It ties stop-motion and computer animation together for a really cool effect.  It came out in 2009 and has a similar feel to Nightmare Before Christmas.

This movie is better for kids who are slightly older, maybe 10+.

This movie is based on a novel written by Neil Gaiman.  This scary book was meant for children and teens.

It is about a girl named Coraline, who has moved into an apartment and is bored.  She ends up in another world that is almost identical to the world she originally lived in.  At first, she loves her new world, but she soon realizes that she needs to get back to her world.  My description is very mild compared to the actual movie.  The movie is dark and creepy.

You can check out Coraline here.

Hocus Pocus

Hocus Pocus came out in 1993 and stars Bette Middler and Sarah Jessica Parker.  This movie is fun, not too scary and is family friendly.

This movie is about three sisters who are evil witches and live in Salem.  They come back to life hundreds of years after their death when a couple of kids accidentally resurrects them.

If you want to watch this fun Halloween movie, you can do so here.

Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween Movie

This Halloween-themed Winnie the Pooh movie called Pooh’s Heffalump Movie is perfect the younger kids.

Join Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore and the rest of the gang as they have a Halloween adventure in the Hundred Acre Woods.  This is a great movie for the younger kids.

As I write this, this movie is currently unavailable for streaming or for purchase through Amazon.  This might change at another time and make sure to check Netflix as well.  They are constantly adding new content.  If you’d like to check the status on Amazon, click here.

Beetlejuice isn’t necessarily a Halloween movie, but it is one that is somewhat creepy, is about a ghost, yet it isn’t too scary.  This is a great movie for tweens and older.

You can find Beetlejuice here.

Harry Potter

All the Harry Potter movies are great for watching at Halloween.

If you don’t know who Harry Potter is, he is an 11-year-old boy who finds out he is a wizard and then goes to Hogwarts, which is a school for wizards.  He has many adventures at this school.  I wouldn’t’ consider the first several of the movies in this series scary, although there are ghosts and such in these.

You can watch this online here.

This was one of my favorite movies growing up.

This is a movie about a girl and her dad who move into an old mansion.  The mansion has ghosts haunting it!  One of these ghosts is Casper, who is friendly and becomes friends with the girl.

You can watch Casper here.

The Witches

This movie is based on the Roald Dahl book “The Witches”.  It is slightly creepy, but everything from Roald Dahl is.

It’s about a boy who goes on holiday with his Grandmother.  There is a witch convention at the hotel they are staying at.

You can watch The Witches online here.

This is one of my kids’ favorite movies of all time.

Ghosts invade NYC and it’s up to the Ghostbusters to get rid of them.

Ichabod and Mr. Toad

The Adventures of Ichabod is the Legend of Sleepy Hollow and a great movie to watch around Halloween.

You can see this move here.

Curious George A Halloween Boo Fest

My kids have all loved the Curious George movies and this movie is no exception.

Curious George is solving a mystery of “No-Noggin” a ghost who steals everyone’s hats.  This isn’t a scary movie at all and is great for little kids.

Click here to watch it online.  Make sure to also check Netflix for this movie.  We have watched it several times over the years on there.

The Haunted Mansion

This is a fun, “spooky” Halloween movie.  It’s not the greatest movie out there, but it might just surprise you and how much you enjoy watching it.

The Haunted Mansion can be found here.

Scared Shrekless

Shrek’s friends all tell scary stories trying to scare Shrek.

This is currently not available for streaming, but you can pick up the DVD here.  Make sure to also check Netflix for this movie, I am almost positive I’ve seen it there around Halloween in years past.

Double Double Toil and Trouble

Twin sisters try to save their family finances by going on a Halloween expedition.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

When the Pumpkin King discovers Christmas town he takes Santa hostage in order to Christmas to Halloween town.

You can watch The Nightmare Before Christmas online here.

This movie is about a girl who follows her Grandmother to Halloweentown.

The Halloween Tree

This is a movie that ties in the history of Halloween to the storyline.  It is about 5 friends.  Four of them get together on Halloween, but their 5th friend is missing.  The four kids then go on a search to find their missing friend.
